Trying out some speed painting to loosen up a bit. Each one was done in 30 minutes. After struggling through my last post, I decided it would be a good idea to just pump out a few quickies in order to boost my speed a bit. I'll try and keep this up on a regular basis, even if I dont post all of them. I think it will help in the long run by making me pick a hard stopping point and keep my from over working each and every painting. Cheers!

So I took a break from this piece for a while and decided to come back and rework it a bit more. I ended up using the first sketch as a base for a new drawing all together. I made a new layer on top of the old black and white image and started sketching over top until I got it where I wanted it. Now I'm in the process of adding color, light and shadow. As you can see, it is still in need of some love, but I figured I'd go ahead and post my halfway point just for the hell of it.

Please feel free to send feedback and any tips or critiques that might help! I'm still in the process of "finding my style" if there is such a thing to be found. I've been trying some new techniques lately so hopefully I can start narrowing down my approach soon. Anyway, thanks for stopping by... if there is anybody out there reading this :)

Ok I know it's been a while since I've posted something, but I swear it has been a busy month! Anyway, I thought I'd post my latest work in progress. I'm not sure what it is that I am struggling with on this one, but I need to come back to it some other time... It's just not working for me right now. I think I reworked the goat's head about 3 times now, and I think I just need to step away and try painting something else. Maybe later I'll come back with a better sense for what I'm looking for on this.

Here is a little line up of some of the kids I've been sketching. I'm still trying to establish a painting style that suits me. I mostly use a simple round brush with about 75% hardness and just blend by color sampling around the image. I need to keep practicing!

I painted this in about an hour and a half using PhotoShop. I chose four variations of gray and used the color picker to select around and blend in the shading.

I was really hesitant to post these sketches because I am not at all pleased with how they look. The only reason I am posting these is because I feel this is the best way for me to improve as an artist. Most would agree that in order to become a great artist you need to go through a ton of crap drawings before you can draw a good one. If I were to keep these to myself and not put them out there I would be ignoring the most important part of learning... the struggle. So with that said, I am posting these as a reminder to myself that I can get better if I put in the time and if I want it bad enough. Stay tuned...

zbrush

I just recently started learning ZBrush so I thought I'd post some screen grabs of my first "real" attempt at sculpting. For those who have not tried ZBrush yet, I highly encourage you to give it a go! My experience so far has been utterly amazing. Sculpting feels extremely intuitive, and the learning curve is not nearly as steep as other 3d programs like Maya or 3dsmax. As a side note... this is not my typical art style as you may have noticed. This was more of a test of how detailed I could get. So with that said; expect to see something that feels a little more like my style in future posts.

I wanted to draw last night, but couldnt come up with any ideas for what I wanted to draw. Don't you hate that? You want to be creative but nothing comes out. Anyway, I forced myself to stop thinking and just start drawing. I'm finding its better to just start the process to get the juices flowing rather than waisting time thinking about what I should or shouldnt draw.

I started this the other night, and thought id post the work in progress. Ive been a bit destracted with the new imac so I havnt gotten around to finishing it just yet. Im going to finish getting all my new programs installed as well as updating all the old stuff from my pc on to the mac. So as far as updating goes... im going to try and update twice a week. Even if it has to be work in progress or just sketches.
